Safe & Sound || Ending Para

Katie sat on her bed, shuffling through old pictures that she had kept over the past year. Pictures of her family, before everything had fallen apart, pictures of her and Drew, Jake, and all of her friends that she had made at Degrassi. She thought back to the times that she had shared with Drew, the good and the bad. He was her best friend, and always would be. They had been through so much together, and she would never forget that. She knew that she had treated him wrong, and though she regretted it more than he knew, they wouldn’t have been as close if none of it had happened. She held several photos of her and Jake in her hands, smiling foolishly down at them. He was the boy that she fell in love with, and remained in love with. They had also been through a lot, and everything just made them stronger together. The amount of love that she felt for that boy was unmatched by any other, and would remain that way. A picture of her and Owen surfaced, bringing back a rush of emotions regarding that ‘fling’ and the baby that was gained and then lost. Though they were never official, she’d had something with him at one point, and after everything that happened with them, he would always hold a special place in her heart. She flipped through more pictures and stopped on one of her and her little sister, Maya. They had been so happy and close at one point, but that closeness seemed to be decreasing. She would work as hard as she could to regain that bond that he had with her sister. Pictures of her and KC surfaced, and she shook her head at the failure of a relationship. Though they were never actually together, he was one of her good friends and would stay that way. Once she had gone through all of the pictures, she allowed a tear to leave her eye. Graduation was quickly approaching, and she knew that she wouldn’t be as close to most of her friends once she went away to college.

After graduation, Katie turned down her scholarship to Princeton to study at Carnegie Mellon with her boyfriend, Jake. He was most important to her after having lost a lot of her family, and she cherished all of the time that they had together. She pursued soccer, making it as star player on the soccer team at her University.

Though her life was never perfect, Katie found happiness in the greatest form. Love. She found it from friends, her father (who had stuck by her side through everything), and most importantly, her boyfriend. She knew that things would change dramatically, and change they did, but she embraced everything in the most positive way she could. She grew older, married, and had children with her high school sweetheart, and never regretted a thing. Without all of the love and support throughout the years, she would have never made it to where she did.

Drew took a sip from his bottle of water while Katie took a sip of hers. “Honestly, I’m not quite sure if things are getting better.” He said as he wiped some sweat off of his face. It was kind of humid, unseasonable warm for this time of the year. Drew listened with a smile on his face as Katie began to talk about how great things were going with Jake. At least one of us is happy, he thought to himself. “That’s good, Katie.” Drew said sincerely as they began to continue towards the peak of the hill.

Katie frowned. “What’s going on?” she asked, looking at him before glancing back down at the path. She took another sip of her water as she awaited his response. She gave a small smile at the thought of Jake before speaking. “I’ve never been this happy. It feels great.” she said proudly. “How are things with Mia?” she pondered.

Drew wondered how she could be so happy after everything that had happened to her, especially with the lost of her baby. However, he was thankful that some how she had managed to find happiness in all of the despair. “Branch..” Drew warned as he stepped over a big branch that was laying across the dirt trail. “It’s going great, just all this do I take the job or don’t I take the job has really stressed me out.”

Katie played with her hands as they continued their trek up the slope. He looked down quickly, stepping over the branch just in time. “Thanks,” she said, regarding his warning. “I know it must be hard,” she said sympathetically. “What are thinking?” she questioned.

“I’ve been pretty good, just stressed with all of the thinking I’ve been doing about my future.” Drew said as he kept his eyes on the trail, momentarily turning so that he could see how well Katie was hanging in there. “How have you been? I hope life’s finally starting to get better for ya, I’ve been so worried.” Drew said, referring to her recent miscarriage and all of the problems that she had been going through. He really hated seeing all the bad stuff happen to his best friend who didn’t deserve any of it.

Katie nodded. “I know how you feel. But things are getting better, right?” she asked. She hated that he had been so stressed out lately. She pulled her water bottle from the little pouch in her pack and took a sip before putting it back. “I’ve been wonderful,” she said proudly. “Things with Jake are absolutely perfect. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” she said, smiling at just the thought.

Katie nodded, smiling as she took in the crisp air. The sky was light and promising, and the area smelled wonderfully of trees and winter. “I’m glad you brought me here, it’s so nice,” she said, looking around as they began to walk on the worn trail. “So, how far are we going?” she asked, looking over to him as she awaited his answer. Being a soccer player, she had a fair amount of stamina built up, so distance was no problem for her.

“Uh, it’s like 10km so it shouldn’t be an all day event unless we just take it slow and enjoy the time we have together.” Drew said as they continued to climb the incline. “We haven’t really had the chance to talk much anymore, kinda seems like we kinda went our own ways after the breakup.” He said as he glanced over at Katie. It seemed like their lives had taken on completely different directions over the past few months. He was thankful that they still managed to salvage their friendship.

Katie nodded, shrugging her shoulders. “Hmm, that’s not so bad,” she said, continuing to walk the curved path on the mountain. “I know, I hate that.” she said, referring to the lack of the communication after their break up. It had been a tough situation, and Katie hated to even think about it. “So how have you been?” she inquired.

“You’re my best friend too, Miss Matlin. You’re one of the reasons why it would be so hard for me to leave.” Drew said with a smile on his face as they pulled up to a small gravel lot where the hikers would park their vehicles. Getting out of the car, he took a deep breath of the crisp winter…
